Back to Basics
Before plastic became widely available in the middle of the last century, mothers would lovingly wrap their babies’ cotton diapers in wool. Modern mothers are now recognizing the benefits of wool more and more. Listed below are just a few of the countless reasons why wool is so much better for your baby’s bottom than the other synthetic materials available on the market.

How does wool work?
Wool is naturally highly absorbent. The addition of lanolin, a waxy conditioner naturally found in wool, increases its water-resistance. This is why a drop of water on your Woolly Mommath cover will ball up and roll around. Very basically, moisture from your baby’s diaper is first repelled by the cover. If the diaper is left on the baby, the inside layer of wool begins to slowly absorb the moisture, and it evaporates out the other side.

Wool is breathable!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a lot of people trying to sell me synthetic covers tell me how breathable it is. Have you ever tried to blow air through a synthetic cover? I haven’t! Even tightly woven wool allows a considerable amount of air to circulate to your baby’s bottom. This allows the skin to breathe and assists in the prevention of diaper rash. It’s also a lot more comfortable than having a wet bottom wrapped up in plastic!

But won’t my baby’s bottom just freeze if it’s wet and air is circulating on it?
No! That’s another great benefit of wool! This is why wool socks are so widely worn by hikers and people who work outdoors, it maintains its insulative propertied even when wet. Wool naturally regulates temperature, keeping your baby cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Wool is naturally antibacterial and resistant to odor between washings.
Lanolin is amazing stuff. Not only does it condition and waterproof your cover, it also acts as a natural soap. When the lanolin becomes wet, it is activated, killing germs, which cause odor and can attribute to diaper rash. This helps your diaper stay fresh and clean. Synthetic covers, on the other hand, tend to hang onto odors. As long as the wool has not become dirty, it can be air-dried and used again! Wool only needs to be washed about once a week unless it has been soiled.
